Artist briefing session
10am Saturday 13 December 2008
@ the Nowa Nowa Hotel , then on-site walk
Red Tractor Art, Nowa Nowa, are excited (if a little surprised) to be announcing the launch of their latest project – an artist-built mini-golf course!
Excited, because every artist we’ve asked, has always wanted to build one. Surprised, because, well, you don’t always convince the funding bodies that you’ve really got another great idea.
Thankfully Arts Victoria think it is, and have provided the funding to go ahead. That means exciting commissions for local artists, and the creation of another ‘out of the ordinary’ Nowa Nowa sculpture.
The plan now is to design and build a contemporary, life-size, ‘interactive’ artwork – in the form of 9 minigolf holes – and we are calling on Gippsland artists to take up the challenge.
As you’d imagine, this project presents quite a few artistic challenges.
Firstly, each ‘hole’ needs to reflect some element of the Gippsland character. A local ‘truth’.
We don’t know what those elements might be yet … caravans, geothermal hotspots, jellyfish, blue green algae, sleeper cutters, Indigenous culture, CWA d'oileys- who knows? However we are sure that after the initial briefing session, artists will be inspired to find the the ‘truth’ that their work (if selected) will reflect.
Proposed works will need to be excellent, robust, resolved, exciting, witty, and well-suited to the landscape. And should tell us 'something' about Gippsland life - perhaps from a new perspective.
We’re not looking for ‘murals’ or ‘words’, but rather, shapes, materials and ideas crafted by artists to create an extraordinary sculptural work - multimedia, neon, marineply, sound, kinetic - we're open to all kinds of ideas.
Of course, we’re not looking for corny cliches of Gippsland life. We like quirky, unexpected ideas.
So, we are now calling for artists who would like to know more.
There will be an initial briefing – open to all interested (or curious) artists - at the Nowa Nowa Hotel at 10am, Saturday, 13 December where Gary Yelen will give an overview of the project, processes, budgets and timelines.
Proposals will be received over the following weeks, and then shortlisted by a panel of selectors in early January.
[Proposals will be ranked on a range of criteria - including the artist's ability to demonstrate their engagement with a sector of the Gippsland community. Quirky, marginal , mainstream ... whatever - but stories, artfully told, are crucial.]
Phase one of the project will commission four artists to complete their work in time for the East Gippsland on Show event in May 2009.
